The Mercator Network of Language Diversity Centres organizes a Conference on “Developments in the curriculum of language teaching and learning, at primary school level and in secondary education” 17th-18th September 2009 in Leeuwarden/Ljouwert, Netherlands. The conference is going to cover topics on the role of multilingual education in relation to multicultural society, involvement of immigrants in multilingual education, developments in education and teaching systems and the continuity between school systems, and the promotion of a language outside the formal education.
The conference is going to be composed of plenary sessions, workshops and parallel sessions, which gives all participants the opportunity to actively interact with each other on a professional level.
With this conference we intend to develop a research agenda for the field of multilingual education. It is the first one in a series of three conferences which will be held during the working period of the Mercator Network (2009-2011).
The other conferences will presumably be held early June 2010 in Aberystwyth on “The use of new and traditional media and information technology to strengthen linguistic diversity and support language learning”, and early October 2011 in Barcelona on “Developments in the setting of minimum standards for Regional and Minority languages in education and the essential legal provisions and requirements for their implementation”.

The International Association of Language and Social Psychology (IALSP) aims to ensure the continuity and development of biennial international conferences (ICLASPs) that serve important functions of: exchange of ideas; establishing and extending contacts; facilitating collaborative research projects; and sharing experiences among colleagues from a variety of disciplines and professions from around the world. The diversity of perspectives focusing on the intersection of language and social behavior and experience has been one of the most exciting and rewarding features of the earlier conferences (in Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, USA, & UK).
The Mercator Research Centre gathers and mobilises expertise in the field of language learning at school, at home and through cultural participation in favour of linguistic diversity of Europe. The Mercator Research Centre brings Europe to Fryslân and Fryslân to Europe. The Mercator Research Centre is part of the Fryske Akademy.
